From Jail to Yale Inspiration

September 12th, 2008 Posted in Business Coaching, Marketing

Think “you got it tough” and that marketing your business is rough?

It is!  Getting a business going and growing is a lot of work.  But the next time you’re feeling frustrated, take a look at Andres Idarraga.  He started out as a punk kid drug dealer, landed in prison, then re-thought his life.  He studied extensively in prison, applied twice to Brown University, an Ivy-League school, and got in the second time.  His motto?

Look at what people say you’ve done wrong, figure out how to

fix it, and do it better the next time, like reading a book, one page at a time.  Get one page done and go to the next.  Discipline and determination are the keys.

What is Idarraga doing now?  He’s heading off to Yale Law School, and plans to eventually start a charter school for at-risk kids.  What a man!

Goals are another of Idarraga’s secrets:

“You have to be a little bit, almost delusional, in thinking about what you’re able to accomplish ….  You have to sometimes have unrealistic goals,”  and a plan to reach them.

When someone turns you down,

“It’s just an opportunity for you to look at the reasons why they say no and to build a better tool set to become better prepared next time and say, ‘Listen, do you remember me? Well, this is what I’ve done since then.’ ”

What are your goals?  Where have you gotten stuck, and how did you overcome it?  Tell us here at the Honey Bee Buzz Marketing Blog.  Leave a comment, or email us.

“My business has doubled and I spend half the time working that I did a year ago because of the work that I did with Honey Bee Buzz Marketing. Heather Cate's business coaching is wonderful; the process itself is more than worth the fees. Her process is totally different than the other people I looked into working with. It's like going to college. You learn to trust yourself, to honor and appreciate yourself and your business. It's not just a simple, thrown-together mechanical experience, it's a process of appreciation and discovery of yourself and your business.”
